Delhi, 12 February: The Supreme Court extended its earlier order granting interim bail to Ashish Mishra, son of union Minister of State for Home, Ajay Kumar Mishra, on Monday in connection with the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence case.

The bench presided over by Justice Surya Kant and Justice K V Viswanathan adjourned the matter after finding no report on the status of the trial after September 26, 2023.

The apex court has asked its registry to obtain a status report from the trial court and in the meantime, extended the interim bail. In January 2023, the court had granted interim bail to Ashish Mishra with certain conditions such as leaving Uttar Pradesh within one week of his release, not participating in any public function in Delhi, and surrendering his passport.

The violence in Lakhimpur Kheri District’s Tikunia had left eight people dead in October 2021 during a protest against UP Deputy Chief Minister’s visit. The UP Police FIR states that four farmers were mowed down by an SUV, in which Ashish Mishra was seen.
