New Delhi, 9 December: An Member of Legislative Assembly related to the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on Friday as a private member’s bill.

Despite opposition from the opposition, the ‘Uniform Civil Code in India Bill-2020’ introduced by BJP MP Kirodi Lal Meena was brought.

Opposition parties including Congress, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal strongly opposed the bill. After the objections of the opposition, there was a division on the introduction of the bill and the motion of the opposition was rejected by 63 versus 23.

Amid the uproar, union Minister Piyush Goyal said in the Rajya Sabha that any member has the right to introduce bills and raise issues of his area in Parliament. There should be a debate on this in the Rajya Sabha. It is not right to criticise the bill, to blame the government on this issue.

On behalf of the opposition, Congress, CPI(M), CPI and Trinamool Congress alleged that the bill is going to destroy the country’s social fabric and unity in diversity.

The Bill envisages a set of laws to protect the individual rights of a citizen, irrespective of religion. Today the Bill has only been introduced in the House.
