Kerala attack: IED used in serial blasts in Ernakulam, one killed, over 36 injured

New Delhi, 29 October: One person was killed and more than 36 people were injured in bomb blasts at a convention center in Kalamassery in Ernakulam district in Kerala on Sunday morning, the police said.

The explosion occurred at a time when prayers by ‘Jehovah’s Witnesses’, a sect of Christians, were going on.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and took stock of the situation after the bomb blast. He has also directed NIA and NSG to reach the spot and investigate the incident.

Kerala Director General of Police (DGP) Sheikh Darvesh Sahab, while talking to journalists, said that preliminary investigation shows that the blast was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

He said that today at around 9:40 am, there was an explosion in Jamra International Convention and Exhibition Center in which one person died and 36 people are undergoing treatment. A regional conference was taking place at the convention centre.

DGP told all our senior officers are on the spot. Investigation is ongoing. Along with this, the police officer appealed to the people to maintain peace and refrain from posting any kind of inflammatory material on social media.

Kerala Minister VN Vasavan’s statement has also come in the matter.

He said that a woman has died in the incident. The woman died due to the fire that broke out after the explosion. Preliminary investigation revealed that there were two consecutive explosions. One person has died and 36 people are injured. The inspection of the matter is going on.
