Heavy snowfall in Himachal Pradesh, tourists at Kufri rescued

Shimla, Jan 29: Himachal Pradesh has been experiencing snowfall for the last two days. Due to widespread snowfall in the hilly areas, the transportation system has been disrupted due to the blocking of many prominent roads.

The capital Shimla is also covered with thick white sheets of snow due to heavy snowfall in the early hours of Wednesday. Tourists are enjoying the snowfall. The vehicles of tourists have been stuck in many places due to snowfall.

This snowfall has affected the movement of vehicles on the inner roads of the capital. However the traffic on the main roads including Bilaspur-Shimla and Kalka-Shimla National Highways is smooth. The administration has deployed machinery to remove snow from the roads. Due to snowfall in Kufri, Narkanda and Khadapathar, upper Shimla has been cut off from the capital for the last two days.

People have to reach Shimla on foot to get the necessary work done from Theog and Kufri. Police are sweating to rescue tourists and passengers trapped in buses in snowfall in Kufri. So far, about 100 people have been evacuated.

Meteorological director Manmohan Singh said that Shimla city received 10 cm of fresh snow. Kufri has 45 cm of snow. Kalpa in Kinnaur 26 cm, Chamba in Dalhousie 16 cm , Keylong in Lahaul-Spiti 10 cm and Manali, the famous tourist destination of Kullu, recorded 8 cm of snow.

According to District Deputy Commissioner Amit Kashyap, no untoward incident or any major damage due to snowfall has been reported from anywhere. All the roads in Upper Shimla are blocked, but most of the main roads of Shimla city have been restored. He has instructed people and tourists not to travel towards high altitude areas in view of inclement weather.

It is noteworthy that Shimla has received snow for the seventh time in this winter season. In January, people and tourists have seen maximum snow and snow in Shimla. The weather department has forecast snowfall in the mountainous areas including Shimla for the next two days.
