New Delhi, August 06: The decision of renaming India’s highest sporting honour Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award to Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award by the Prime Minister Modi is being welcomed in the country, but Congress party leaders are opposing this decision in many words.

Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh while talking to reporters on Friday took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that the Modi government is expert in the work of changing the name. The Sardar Patel Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad was renamed as Narendra Modi Stadium.

He further said that he wondered why the award was named after Major Dhyan Chand. He sincerely hoped that the Rajiv Gandhi Sports Award would be renamed as Narendra Modi Sports Award.

At the same time, Congress leader Subodh Kant Sahai also opposed this decision of the Prime Minister. Sahai said that Rajiv Gandhi had conducted the first Asiad in the country. His contribution to the game was immense. It is not right to change the name of Rajiv Gandhi from the sports award. ]

Congress MP K. Suresh has also opposed this decision of the Centre. Suresh said that Rajiv Gandhi had encouraged the youth to take up sports. In such a situation, the government did not do well to change the name.

It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced that the citizens of the country want the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Award to be renamed as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. In such a situation, respecting their sentiments, the Khel Ratna will be called Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. After this announcement, many Congress leaders opposed this decision of the Centre with their own logic.
