Lucknow, 14 July: The Uttar Pradesh government has revoked the ‘Y-category’ security protection offered to senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, citing the fact that it was unnecessary.

Rampur Additional Superintendent of Police Sansar Singh stated that they received a letter from the security headquarters in Lucknow stating that Khan, a 10-time MLA from Rampur, does not require Y-category security. His security was revoked in accordance with the decision, he noted.

According to Singh, Khan was assigned three shooters and security officers who were stationed at his home around the clock under the Y-category protection.

He stated that all security personnel (including Azam) had been called back to the police lines in Rampur. Khan won the Rampur assembly seat for the tenth time in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh elections.

He resigned from the Lok Sabha after becoming an MLA. The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly Secretariat announced Khan’s exclusion from the House in October 2022, a day after a court sentenced him to three years in prison in a hate speech case.
