New Delhi, Aug. 16 : After Pakistan backed by China formally asked the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to hold a closed-door meeting on Kashmir issue today, Congress on Friday said the UNSC meeting on the developments in  Kashmir was a “diplomatic and strategic” failure of  the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government and urged Prime  minister Narendra Modi to call his friends in the Security Council to get the meeting cancelled.

While addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Congress spokesperson, Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Friday said the UN meeting was called at the behest of China calling it a “matter of  grave concern to the entire nation”.

The senior Congress leader said Congress was extremely disturbed and shocked to see what was happening at the UN meeting.

He added Congress viewed it as matter of grave concern to the entire nation as well as to every citizen of India.

Singhvi said Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) and Ladakh were “integral, inalienable, untouchable” parts of India.

Adding Kashmir was a non-negotiable issue, non-discussable issue as far as India is concerned.

Singhvi said it was shocking that after several decades, Kashmir issue had been internationalized at the UNSC today.

Singhvi further added that External Affairs minister Jashankar was  in China but the neighbouring country had the guts to approach the UN Security Council.

Singhvi said Modi government gave the impression that China was going along with India.

Pakistan had asked for a meeting of UNSC meeting on Kashmir following India’s decision to abrogate Article 370 and Article 35-A of India’s constitution.

It is noteworthy that, except for Pakistan’s all-weather ally, China, all four permanent members of UN Security Council have openly supported New Delhi’s stand stating Kashmir was a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan, even the  US said the  developments in Kashmir were an “internal matter of India”.
