Surat / Ahmedabad, 20 April: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, convicted in a defamation case, got a jolt on Thursday from the Surat Sessions Court. The court on Thursday dismissed Rahul Gandhi’s petition against this sentence.

A case of criminal defamation was filed by Surat West MLA Purnesh Modi against Rahul Gandhi’s statement regarding Modi’s surname. In this case, Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to two years by the Surat court. After which Rahul Gandhi’s parliament membership was cancelled under the Representation of the People Act.

To keep this sentence pending, Rahul Gandhi had filed a petition in the court, on which the court’s decision came on Thursday. The defence counsel said that he would now appeal in the High Court.
