New Delhi, 23 November: The Supreme Court has directed the Chief Secretaries of all states and union territories (UTs) to release pension to retired judicial officers as per the recommendations of the Second National Judicial Pay Commission by December 8.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud told the Chief Secretaries of states and union territories to be prepared to face contempt proceedings if they do not comply with this order.

Earlier on May 19, the court had ordered all states and union territories to comply with the order by July 30.

The court said that despite earlier orders, some states and union territories have not followed it. In such a situation, the court can initiate contempt proceedings against them.

The court strictly said that the pension amount should reach the accounts of retired judges by December 8 as per the order.
