New Delhi, 28 May: On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Parliament Building. Modi, dressed in traditional clothing, entered Parliament through Gate No. 1 and was greeted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Against the backdrop of Vedic chanting from Karnataka’s Shringeri Math, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted “Ganapati Homam” to request Gods to bless the inauguration of the new Parliament building. With holy sceptre in hand, the prime minister prostrated before “Sengol” and sought blessings from high priests of several adheenams in Tamil Nadu.

Modi then led a procession of ‘Sengol’ to the new Parliament building, where it was set in a special enclosure on the right side of the Speaker’s chair in the Lok Sabha chamber, to the music of ‘nadaswaram’ and chanting of Vedic mantras. Chief Ministers, as well as union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, S Jaishankar, and Jitendra Singh, BJP president J P Nadda and several others graced the occasion with their august presence. PM Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, union ministers and state chief ministers, thereafter attended a multi-faith prayer meeting at the new Parliament building.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally opened the new parliament building with an early morning havan (a ceremonial fire ceremony), followed by multi-faith prayers and an official opening. Following the installation of the historic ‘Sengol’ near the Lok Sabha Speaker’s chair in the new Parliament building, PM Modi received blessings from seers of various Adheenams from Tamil Nadu.

With the inauguration of the new Parliament House on Sunday, India has reached a historic milestone. After relying on an almost century-old Parliament building that served as a reminder of the colonial past, India now proudly exhibits a new architectural marvel that genuinely symbolises the character of a sovereign nation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously claimed the new Parliament building will make every Indian proud, as he shared a video of the newly-constructed complex on Twitter and invited people to share it on the social media site with the hashtag ‘MyParliamentMyPride’.

“A fitting tribute to the best of ancient and modern Bharat. It is a source of pride that the placement of Sengol, an administrative emblem of the strong Cholas, will serve as a continual reminder of this Democracy’s greatest characteristics – inclusion and diversity. Congratulations and Best Wishes,” Sadhguru tweeted. union Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda believes that in order to foster democracy, opposition parties should refrain from skipping the opening ceremony of the new Parliament building.
