Pakistan Polls: Imran Khan’s PTI leading in 154 National Assembly constituencies

Islamabad, 09 Feb: Sporadic violence and allegations of rigging were reported during the polling in Pakistan. Former Pakistan Prime Minister and founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Imran Khan is in jail and his party symbol was frozen. Even then out of the 163 seats of which trends have been reported, PTI-supported candidates in 154 constituencies are leading.

Polling for 266 out of 336 National Assembly seats were held on Thursday. Polling of one seat out of this was cancelled due to the death of a candidate.

The Election Commission started announcing results late in the night. The counting of votes is in progress. Major leaders who have been declared elected include the former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif, Shehbaz?s son Hamza Sharif and daughter Maiyam Nawaz, PTI leaders Gauhar Ali Khan and Asad Kaisar. PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari and his son Bilawal are leading in their respective constituencies.

Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N), PTI, and Pakistan People?s Party (PPP) are in the triangular contest in Pakistan. PTI leader and former cricketer Imran Khan is in jail and has been banned from contesting elections and holding any official post. His party?s symbol (cricket bat) was also frozen. His party workers are contesting elections as independent candidates. Out of the 265 seats for which elections were held a party will have to win at least 133 seats to form the government.

PTI leader Bar Gauhar Ali Khan claimed that his party candidates are leading in more than 150 National Assembly constituencies. His party will again form the government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
