Lucknow, June 30: For the first time, the state government is conducting online verification of birth and death certificates to assist recipients in accessing government benefits.

Sheetal Verma, director, Census Operations (DCO), Uttar Pradesh, has taken the effort to ensure that beneficiaries receive timely service delivery using IT-enabled facilities for automated verification of birth and death certificates with minimal human intervention.

A construction worker was caught aback when he got money through a government scheme just a week after the birth of his second child.

The quick execution was made possible by the state’s first-of-its-kind online verification of birth and death certificates, which was carried out to assist recipients in accessing government benefits.

“Online verification is critical in eradicating false credentials for government benefits. It has also lowered the time it takes to delivery of services,” Verma stated.

She gave the example of a physical birth certificate of a baby girl born to a mother from Chandauli that passed through many hands before being validated from the area where the kid was born, saying, “With online system, it is simply a one-second interface and the verification is done.”

The UP Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board (UPBOCW), a subsidiary of the labor department, was the first to see the need for an online verification system and approached the DCO.

“This is a revolutionary move.” UPBOCW secretary Vipin Jain said, “The issues that contributed to the delay in reaching out to beneficiaries.” He described how the Registrar General of India’s (RGI) run Civil Registration System (CRS) birth and death registration records were linked to the API interface.

“All information may be viewed simply by inputting the number found on the birth certificate. This has simplified the large physical verification process,” Jain said.
