Mukhtar Ansari gets 10 yrs jail in 1996 murder case

Ghazipur, 15 December: The MP-MLA court judge on Thursday, while pronouncing verdict in 26-year-old case, sentenced mafia don Mukhtar Ansari to 10-year jail term in Gangster Act case. His accomplice Bhim Singh has been also sentenced to ten years. The court has also imposed a fine of ?5 lakh each.

The conviction pertains to the murder of Avadesh Rai, brother of Congress zonal president Ajai Rai, in 1996 in Ghazipur district. Ansari is a five-time former MLA and is at present cooling his heels in Banda jail.

Adequate police security arrangements were made in the court premises regarding the verdict.

On Thursday, Special Judge ADJ Durgesh Pandey sentenced Mukhtar Ansari on the basis of witnesses and evidence. Mukhtar Ansari appeared in the court through video conferencing. His accomplice Bhim Singh was taken into custody after being sentenced.

According to government advocate Neeraj Srivastava, Mukhtar Ansari and his associates have a total of five cases.
