Kanpur, April 8: The Kanpur commissionerate police arrested Parvez Saifi, a close associate of Dr Afzal, the main accused in the infamous kidney transplant gang late last night from the Rawatpur area, police told.
A police team led by DCP SM Qasim Abidi traced the absconding accused’s mobile location and apprehended him. Police also recovered ₹ 9 lakh from Saifi. It is believed this money was obtained through kidney smuggling. The arrest was based on a viral video in which Saifi and Dr. Afzal were seen sitting amidst 500 rupee notes.
The police have arrested another accused, Parvez Saifi, late last night in connection with the illegal buying and selling of kidneys in private hospitals in the Rawatpur police station area of Kanpur city. Nine accused have been arrested so far, including Meerut resident Parvez Saifi.
According to the police, Parvez Saifi is a notorious criminal and, along with Dr. Afzal, handled logistics and transportation for this illegal network.
The police investigations have also revealed that Parvez conducted reconnaissance of hospitals and surrounding areas before operations. Police are investigating the ₹9 lakh recovered from Saifi’s possession as money related to illegal kidney trades.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), West, S.M. Qasim Abidi, said on Wednesday that video and audio evidence was also recovered during the investigation. An audio recording reveals the death of a woman after a kidney transplant, which is being investigated seriously. Police are also conducting a thorough investigation into the donor and recipient.
Meanwhile, an interrogation of the first arrested accused, Shivam, has revealed several new facts, based on which the police are searching for other individuals. Police believe that more people may be involved in this racket, and raids are being conducted to reach them.
