Justice S.A. Bobde to be next Chief Justice of India, will take oath on November 18

New Delhi, October 29: Justice S.A. Bobde will be the next Chief Justice of India(CJI). President Ram Nath Kovind has signed a warrant for his appointment. Justice S.A. Bobde will be sworn in as the next Chief Justice on November 18.

The current Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi is retiring on November 17. The next day after he retired, President Ramnath Kovind Justice S.A. Bobde will be sworn in as Chief Justice. Justice Bobde will be the 47th Chief Justice. Justice Bobde will have a tenure of one year and five months as the Chief Justice. Justice Bobde will retire on April 23 2021.

Justice Bobde was born on April 24 1956 in Nagpur. He had completed his studies from Nagpur University. He was appointed as Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in 2000. In 2012, he was appointed as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court.

In April 2013, he was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court.
Justice Bobde is a member of the five-member Constitution Bench hearing the Ayodhya case. Justice Bobde was also a member of the Bench hearing the BCCI, a petition banning firecrackers. Justice Bobde was a member of the nine-member bench hearing the matter of right to privacy. Justice Bobde was a member of the three-member bench set up on the Aadhaar case.

Justice Bobde was the chairman of the Internal Investigation Committee constituted in the sexual harassment case against the current Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi. Justice Bobde is hearing a petition filed against preventing the entry of women into mosques.

Justice S.A. Bobde’s full name is Sharad Arvind Bobde. His father Arvind Bobde was the Advocate General of the Government of Maharashtra.
