New Delhi, February 08: Bilateral relations between India and Malaysia received a new boost during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Malaysia. The visit resulted in significant agreements between the two countries in defense, trade, digital, energy, health, education, and cultural cooperation, along with important public interest announcements, which are considered important in further strengthening the India-Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), during the visit, India and Malaysia exchanged Memoranda of Understanding, MoUs, and other documents in areas such as audio-visual co-production, disaster management, anti-corruption, UN peacekeeping, semiconductors, health, national security, social security, and vocational education and training. The report of the 10th India-Malaysia CEO Forum was also presented, which included suggestions for furthering trade and investment cooperation.
Aiming to promote cooperation in the digital and financial sectors, a cross-border payments agreement was signed between India’s NPCI International Limited and Malaysia’s PayNet SDN BHD, which is expected to facilitate fast, secure, and affordable digital payments for citizens, tourists, students, and businesses of both countries. As part of cooperation in the field of health and traditional medicine, an agreement was also reached to further academic and research collaboration related to Ayurveda.
The announcements made during the visit included the decision to establish an Indian Consulate General in Malaysia, which will provide greater access to consular services for the Indian community there.
The establishment of a dedicated Thiruvalluvar Centre at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur and the launch of the Thiruvalluvar Scholarship for Malaysian citizens were announced.
A cross-border payments agreement was signed between NPCI International Limited and PayNet SDN BHD in the field of digital payments.
