Kolkata, 28 April: Senior Congress politician P Chidambaram called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a master of hyperbole for turning a mathematical inevitability into a certainty, claiming that India will become the world’s third biggest economy regardless of who becomes PM.

The former union finance minister stated that India will achieve the feat given the size of its people and that there was no magic involved, but he did not provide a time range for the country to reach the coveted third spot in the world list.

According to the World Economy Rankings 2024, India has a GDP of $4.8 trillion, trailing only the United States, China, and Japan, and is currently tied with Germany.

Countries such as France, Italy, Brazil, Canada, and the United Kingdom, all of which are among the world’s top ten economies, rank lower than India. Narendra Modi is a master at hyperbole. He is converting a mathematical certainty into a guarantee. Chidambaram believes that India will inevitably become the world’s third largest economy (in terms of GDP).

In 2004, India’s GDP was ranked 12th. In 2014, it ascended to eighth position. In 2024, it was ranked fifth biggest. Regardless of who the prime minister is, the GDP will become the world’s third biggest. There’s no magic in it. Given our population size, it is an algebraic inevitability, he stated.
