India grants $100 mn loan to Maldives for projects

New Delhi, 2 August: India will provide $100 million line of credit to Maldives for time-bound implementation of various projects. Apart from this, financial assistance will be given for additional 2,000 social housing units in the construction project of 4,000 social housing units in Greater Male.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Salih held delegation level talks at Hyderabad House in Delhi on Tuesday. After this both the leaders addressed the joint press conference. Documents related to six agreements were shared in the presence of both the leaders.

Modi said that in the last few years there has been a renewed vigour in the relations between India and Maldives and the closeness of both the countries is great. Despite the challenges, the cooperation and wider partnership is a steady progress. Close cooperation in the field of defense and security is essential for maintaining peace and stability in the region, added Modi.

He said India has also decided to provide an additional line of credit of $100 million so that all projects can be completed in a time-bound manner. Modi said that the projects were also reviewed for the construction of 4,000 social housing units in Greater Male. India will additionally provide financial assistance for 2,000 social housing units.

In the program, President of Maldives said that the relationship between the two countries is beyond the diplomatic realm. He added that the relationship between the two continues to grow through political trust, economic cooperation and coherent strategic policies. This visit reaffirms the special relationship that the two countries have developed and is demonstrated through regular contact, Solih said.
