New Delhi, 26 October: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi on Tuesday announced the launch of a new postgraduate program ‘MTech in Machine Intelligence and Data Science (MINDS)’ focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI).

However, this program will start from July 2022. Students having Bachelor Degree in Science or Engineering will be eligible for this programme.

A top official of the institute said that the School of Artificial Intelligence (SCAI) at IIT Delhi will launch a new postgraduate program focused on artificial intelligence. The Senate, the faculty body responsible for all major academic decision making of IIT Delhi, has approved the proposed program named “M Tech in Machine Intelligence and Data Science (MINDS)”.

M. Tech in MINDS will be a major educational program for the school and is expected to start in July 2022. This will be the second degree awarded by the SCAI. Earlier, the school had started a PhD in AI.

The founding head of the school, Prof Mausam said that our PhD program has shown great interest in its first year. We had a 90 percent success rate among PhD students who joined SCAI last semester, which is exceptional for a young academic unit like ours, as students generally prefer more established academic programs. But they chose us, suggesting that we have built a really strong faculty team in AI.

SCAI currently lists about 40 faculty members on its list, including adjunct faculty members from industry research centers such as Microsoft Research, Google AI and IBM Research.

M Tech in MINDS is planned as an industry-sponsored programme. The students will be expected to work on AI problems related to the industry, as they will be co- mentored by a professor from IIT Delhi and a researcher from the sponsoring company. All the students having bachelor degree in science or engineering will be eligible for this program.

Director of IIT Delhi Prof V. Ramgopal Rao said, “Educational institutions cannot remain silent today. They should work closely with all stakeholders, including industry, non-profits and government organizations. The M.Tech program at MINDS will activate academic-industry collaboration in AI.

“The MINDS curriculum will also include core AI technologies such as deep learning and application-oriented courses such as data mining, computer vision, natural language processing, and AI for healthcare, and fundamental courses on mathematics under modern AI technologies,” added Director IIT Delhi.

Prof Rao further told the School of Artificial Intelligence (SAI) was established last year with the aim of strengthening the education, research and applications of AI. It encourages multidisciplinary collaboration between AI and domain experts to advance fundamental research that could impact real applications.

“The school since its inception has been making rapid strides in synergizing AI activities throughout the institution and recruiting new faculty,” he concluded.
