Delhi, 25 June: Zohran Mamdani, son of acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair, is poised to become the next mayor of New York City, marking a historic victory as the first Indian-American and first Muslim in this role. The 33-year-old, of Indian descent, gained attention after his main opponent, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, conceded. A democratic socialist and member of the New York State Assembly since 2021, Mamdani focused on issues such as free bus service, childcare, affordable housing, minimum wage increases, and taxing the wealthy during his campaign.

Born in Uganda to noted academic Mahmood Mamdani, he faces an initial support estimate of less than 50 percent, indicating a crucial reliance on ranked-choice voting.

Results will start being announced on July 1. Following his opponent’s concession, Mamdani quoted Nelson Mandela, highlighting the significance of their victory for all New Yorkers.
