Kolkata, 11 April: The Election Commission has declared West Bengal’s ruling party Trinamool Congress as a regional party by removing it from the list of national parties a day earlier.

After this, the party’s veteran MP Saugata Roy had said in the night itself that the party is looking for a legal option for this. However, his tone changed on Tuesday.

Mr Roy told that at present no decision has been taken on whether legal action will be taken or not. It will be decided in the coming time.

Actually, according to the rules, the national party’s tag remains for 10 years. Now that it has been snatched away from the Trinamool Congress, the party will contest at least two Lok Sabha elections as a regional party rather than a national party.

However, according to the rule changed by the Election Commission in 2016, earlier only national and regional parties were announced in five years, which now happens in 10 years.

The Trinamool Congress was preparing to go to court regarding the fact that when it got the national party tag in 2016, it cannot be withdrawn within seven years in 2023, but the notification issued by the Election Commission regarding the Trinamool Congress In the same, all the legal options of the party have been closed.

It has been clarified in this that in the 2011 assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress formed the government in West Bengal. After that, in 2012, its performance was better in the Manipur assembly elections.

Earlier in 2009 Arunachal assembly elections also got more than six percent votes and in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections also Trinamool Congress got more than six percent votes in Tripura, that’s why it got national party status in 2014.

According to the rules, 10 years have been completed on January 1, 2023, so now the national party status of Trinamool Congress has been withdrawn due to not fitting in that criteria. That is why legal experts believe that the Trinamool Congress is no longer left with legal options.

By the way, Saugata Roy says that the way for any party to go to the Supreme Court is always open, but on which points the party will go to the court, it is not being decided at the moment.
