Under the central government’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), work is underway to replace old meters with smart meters and install smart meters on new connections across the state. It’s easy to understand how different smart meters are from old meters.
Old meters used manual readings, with employees visiting homes to read them, making errors possible. Tampering was easy, and an estimated bill was generated at the end of the month even when there was no consumption. Due to the lack of an internet connection, the process was completely manual. Smart meters, on the other hand, are connected to the internet and have a SIM card embedded in them. They communicate 24 hours a day, providing updates every 15-30 minutes. Real-time consumption can be viewed through the UPPCL Smart App. The possibility of hacking or tampering is also minimal. Readings and bill generation are automatic.
