New Delhi, 24 January: Delhi’s Karkardooma Court has framed sedition charges against Sharjeel Imam, accused in the Delhi violence case.

Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat gave this order. The court has ordered the framing of the charge of sedition in the case of speech given by Sharjeel Imam at Jamia University in Delhi and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in the UP. Sharjeel Imam is currently lodged in Tihar Jail.

The court had taken cognizance of the supplementary chargesheet filed against Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and Faizan Khan on November 24 2020.

The Delhi Police Special had filed a supplementary charge sheet against Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and Faizan Khan on November 22, 2020.

In the supplementary charge sheet, the Special Cell has also referred to sections 13, 16, 17, and 18 of UAPA, sections 120B, 109, 124A, 147,148,149, 153A, 186, 201, 212, 295, 302, 307, 341, 353, of the Indian Penal Code. Apart from 395,419,420,427,435,436,452,454, 468, 471 and 43, the charges have been framed under Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act and Sections 3 and 4 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.

The chargesheet states that Sharjeel Imam made a hate speech to spread hatred and incite violence against the Central Government, which led to the riots in December 2019.

The Delhi Police has said that a deep conspiracy was hatched under the guise of protest against the Citizenship โ€˜Amendmentโ€™ Act (CAA). Campaigning against this law was carried out in Muslim-majority areas. It was propagated that the citizenship of Muslims would be lost and they would be kept in detention camps.

It is noteworthy that Sharjeel was arrested from Bihar.
