Court hands death penalty to prime accused of Bahraich communal riot, 9 others for life

Bahraich, December 11: A sessions judge has sentenced the accused in the murder case of young Ram Gopal Mishra, who was killed during the Durga idol immersion violence last year in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh. The court sentenced Sarfaraz, the convicted murderer, to death and nine others to life imprisonment. A fine of Rs 1 lakh each was also imposed, while three accused were acquitted.

This infamous murder occurred on October 13, 2024, during the violence in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh, when a dispute arose over the playing of music on a DJ during the Durga idol immersion in Maharajganj. This dispute soon escalated into a fierce clash, and 22-year-old Ramgopal Mishra was shot dead. Many others were injured during the violence, and extensive arson occurred.

Earlier, on Wednesday, the court convicted ten accused, including the prime accused, Abdul Hameed, his three sons: Faheem, Sarfaraz alias Rinku, and Talib alias Sabloo. All the accused were produced in court on Thursday afternoon and sentenced. The administration had made strict security arrangements during the hearing. Nine convicts sentenced to life imprisonment by the court today include Faheem, Saif Ali, Javed Khan, Abdul Hameed, Talib alias Sabloo, Isan, Suheb Khan, Nankau, and Maroof. These ten convicts include Abdul Hameed, his three sons, and six others.

The court acquitted three accused, Shakeel Ahmed, Bablu Afzal alias Kallu, and Khurshid, due to lack of evidence.

After investigating the murder case, Bahraich police filed a charge sheet against the accused in the court of the Additional Sessions Judge on January 11, 2025. 12 witnesses testified in the court in this case. The court gave the verdict after 11 months of hearing.

It is noteworthy that on October 13, 2024, in Bahraich, during the Durga immersion procession in Maharajganj, a dispute broke out over playing songs on a DJ. Within a short time, this dispute turned into a fierce riot. During this, 22-year-old Ramgopal Mishra was shot dead. Many others were also injured during this violence. Houses, shops, hospitals, and vehicles around the incident site were set on fire. There was extensive damage to property.

13 accused were sent to jail by the police.

In this case, the police arrested 13 accused and sent them to jail. The Bahraich District Magistrate had taken action under the National Security Act (NSA) against eight people: Maroof Ali, Nankau, Mohammad Faheem, Mohammad Afzal, Mohammad Zeeshan, Javed, Shoaib Khan and Saif Ali.
