Bogota, 23 February: Abortion is now outlawed in Colombia. The Constitutional Court of Colombia has implemented it only in the Latin American country of Colombia. At present, different countries of Latin America have different laws regarding abortion.

Colombia’s Constitutional Court ruled Monday that abortion should be punishable only if performed after the 24th week of pregnancy. Colombia partially legalized abortion in 2006, when a court allowed the termination of a pregnancy in three situations.

However, these three conditions were included in the case of rape or sexual abuse, in the case of a fatal fetal abnormality, and in the case of a threat to the physical or mental health of the mother in pregnancy.

Colombia’s Constitutional Court stated that there would be no time limit in these three situations. Simultaneously, the court also asked the Colombian government to immediately formulate a public policy to protect the rights of pregnant women.

Mexico’s Supreme Court also ruled the abortion ban unconstitutional last year. Ecuador’s parliament has passed a law allowing abortion in the case of rape. The Argentine parliament passed a law late last year allowing abortions up to the 14th week of pregnancy.
