New Delhi, 14 Oct: The government has designated August 23 as National Space Day, the day Chandrayaan-3 performed a soft landing on the moon. “…the Government of India has declared the 23rd of August of every year as the ‘NATIONAL SPACE DAY’ to commemorate this historic moment,” according to an October 13 notice from the Department of Space.

India has become the fourth country in the world to land a spacecraft on the moon, and the first to land near the lunar surface’s South Pole.

The Pragyan rover was also put on the moon by the Vikram lander to examine the lunar surface. “The outcome of this historic mission will benefit mankind for many years to come,” according to the notice.

It went on to say that August 23 represented an important milestone in the country’s accomplishments in Space Missions, inspiring younger generations to pursue STEM and providing a significant push to the Space industry.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared August 23 to be National Space Day during a visit to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) headquarters in Bengaluru on August 26.

To urge our younger generation to get interested in science, technology, and space, we have chosen to mark August 23, the day our Chandrayaan-3 lander touched down on the moon, as National Space Day, Modi said in Bengaluru.
