Centre asks e-commerce houses to remove Mondelez-owned “Bournvita” from ‘health drinks’ category

Delhi, 13 April: The government has asked all e-commerce companies to remove all beverages, including Mondelez-owned Bournvita, from the ‘health drinks’ category on their websites and platforms.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued these instructions after the report of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).In a notification issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, all e-commerce companies have been asked to remove all beverages, including Bournvita, from the category of ‘health drinks’ from their websites and platforms.

The ministry said in the notification that an investigation by a legal body of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has found that ‘health drink is not a definition’.Earlier on April 2, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had asked all e-commerce companies to put the food products sold on their websites in appropriate categories.

Along with this, the authority had also asked not to misuse words like health drink and energy drink to increase the sales of any beverage.It is noteworthy that, according to a study report, the current market size of Indian energy drinks and sports drinks is 4.7 billion dollars.
