Delhi, 29 February: The union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which aims to provide rooftop solar power units and free electricity to one crore households in India.

With a total outlay of Rs 75,021 crore, the scheme will provide Central financial assistance of 60% for 2 kW systems and 40% for systems between 2 to 3 kW capacity. Through the National Portal, households will have access to relevant information and be able to select a suitable vendor for installation. Collateral-free loans at low interest rates will also be available for households to install residential rooftop solar systems. Other highlights of the scheme include developing a Model Solar Village in each district, incentives for urban and rural areas, and a fund for innovative projects.

The scheme, announced by the Prime Minister in February, will not only result in savings on electricity bills but also provide an opportunity for households to earn additional income by selling surplus power to discoms.
