New Delhi, 15 January: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has banned rallies, public meetings and roadshows in the electoral states till January 22 in view of the soaring cases of coronavirus pandemic. The commission gave this information by tweeting on Saturday.

Election rallies, public meetings and road shows in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur will be banned till January 22, the commission said. Earlier, the commission had banned rallies, public meetings and road shows in the poll-bound states till January 15.

However, the commission in its tweet has allowed political parties to hold meetings in indoor halls with 50 per cent capacity. Along with this, political parties can call a meeting of 300 people following social distance.

The commission has directed the states and district administrations to strictly follow the guidelines set for the prevention of coronavirus.
