16 arrested on charges of conversion in UP

Jaunpur, 13 Feb: Sixteen persons were arrested on Monday, including three women, for allegedly encouraging others to convert to Christianity in the Muradpur Kotila village here, police said.

On Sunday, a case was registered based on a complaint filed by Pramod Kumar Sharma, who claimed that Thomas Joseph, the manager of St Xavier’s School (Badlapur), his aide Dinesh Maurya, and numerous others were involved in religious conversion.

Superintendent of Police (Rural) Shailendra Kumar Singh said the complaint was filed under the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act. According to the police, the apprehended suspects include Joseph and Maurya.
