Azamgarh, 09 September: In the Ajit Rai murder case related to rivalry in the student union elections, the court of Additional Sessions Judge Court No. 1 Ajay Kumar Shahi on Tuesday sentenced six accused to life imprisonment. Along with this, a fine of Rs. 45,000 each was also imposed. Half of the fine amount will be given to the relatives of the deceased Ajit Rai.
According to the prosecution, Ajit Rai, a resident of Tundwal village of Nizamabad police station area, was a third year B.Sc student in Shibli National PG College. He was a probable candidate for the post of General Secretary in the student union elections to be held in the year 2004. Due to election rivalry, on the morning of September 9, 2004, Mohammad Danish son of Mumtaz Ahmed resident of Nai Basti, Shah Samar Yasin son of Naseem resident of Paharpur, Mohammad Shariq, Mohammad Sadiq sons of Mohammad Sabir, Irfan son of Lallan resident of Nirala Nagar, Sadiq Khan son of Vakil Gaffar resident of village Tola and Rinku Zakaria son of Zakaria resident of Badarka attacked Ajit Rai with sticks at the main gate of Shibli Inter College. On the instigation of Rinku Zakaria, Mohammad Danish shot Ajit with a pistol. After this, all the accused fled from the scene in a car. Injured Ajit died in the hospital.
This incident which happened in broad daylight created panic in the area. After investigation, the police filed a charge sheet against eight accused in the court.
On behalf of the prosecution, Assistant Government Advocate Gopal Pandey and the advocate of CBCID got a total of 16 witnesses examined in the court.
After hearing the arguments of both the sides, the court pronounced the above sentence to the accused Mohammad Danish son of Mumtaz, Shah Samar Yasin son of Naseem, Mohammad Shariq, Sadiq Khan alias Rashid and Rinku Zakaria.
