Kolkata, April 12: Amidst the ongoing violent protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Kumar has issued a stern warning.
He said that the police’s restraint should not be mistaken for its weakness and if the situation worsens, strict action will be taken.
In a press conference on Saturday, the DGP said, “It is our responsibility to protect human life. Wherever needed, the police has taken action. If the situation becomes serious, the police will not shy away from taking the strictest steps. Those who are playing with fire and public sentiments should be careful.”
The DGP said that on Friday, the police had to fire four rounds to control the situation in the cotton area of Murshidabad, in which two people were injured. However, now both are out of danger and the situation is under control.
State ADG (Law and Order) Javed Shamim warned about rumours and said, “A factory is being run to spread false news. Everyone should be alert. So far 118 people have been arrested.”
DGP Rajiv Kumar appealed to the people for cooperation and said, “Please do not take the law into your hands. Do not spoil the atmosphere by spreading rumours. Inform the police, we will handle the situation. The control room is active and any disturbance can be reported immediately.”
Governor C.V. Anand Bose has also expressed concern about the violence in Jangipur and issued a video message on this and said, “In democracy, there is a right to protest, but anarchy in the name of protest will not be tolerated. Strictest action will be taken against the miscreants.” The Governor has also sought a report from the Chief Secretary in this regard.
On the other hand, the SDPO of Farekka was injured during the protest on Friday. At the same time, Trinamool MP Khalilur Rahman also had to face the anger of the protesters in Dhuliyan area of Jangipur. Khalilur said, “I was crossing Sajur Mor, when the protesters surrounded me and abused me. There was no flag or leader of any organization there. Later the police rescued me.” A local source said that the MP’s office was also attacked.
Amidst this tense situation in the state, both the police and the administration have made it clear that those who disturb the peace will not be spared under any circumstances and every necessary step will be taken to maintain law and order.
