Chandigarh, May 14: Pakistan handed over the BSF jawan to the Indian Army today after about 21 days. After several flag meetings, Pakistan decided to release the BSF jawan today.

Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, a resident of West Bengal, accidentally crossed the border while patrolling near the India-Pakistan international border on April 23. This incident took place near the Ferozepur sector of Punjab. He is posted in the 73rd battalion of BSF. As soon as he crossed the border, Pakistani Rangers detained him and took him into their custody for questioning. Immediately after the jawan went missing, the BSF contacted its counterpart Pakistan Rangers. Then it was confirmed that the jawan was in Pakistan’s custody.
Several flag meetings were also held between India and Pakistan for the release of Purnam Kumar Shaw. No representative of Pakistan came to one meeting. Meanwhile, tension between India and Pakistan escalated and heavy border firing was done from Pakistan side. After the ceasefire between the two countries, the situation has started to return to normal. After several meetings and the intervention of Indian officials, Poornam Kumar Shaw was handed over to India through the joint check post of Attari in Amritsar on Wednesday morning. This process was completed peacefully and as per the established protocol.
Officials said that this was possible due to coordination between the security agencies on the border of both the countries.
