Karur, September 27: A major accident occurred during the election rally of Tamil Nadu Victory Party (TVP) leader Vijay in Karur district. At least 33 people including 10 women have died so far due to the suffocation, while more than 50 are hospitalized in critical condition.
According to reports, a woman fainted during Vijay’s speech in Karur on Saturday evening. Subsequently, several people collapsed due to the heat and pressure of the crowd. Police immediately sent the unconscious people to the hospital by ambulance, but 33 died before they could be treated.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed grief over the incident and directed hospitals to be prepared for emergencies. State Health Ministers M. Subramaniam and Anbil Mahesh have been ordered to visit the scene.
Former Minister Senthil Balaji visited the injured at the Karur Government Hospital. Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Davidson Devasirvadham was also dispatched to the scene.
Meanwhile, reports of clashes between police and volunteers during crowd control have emerged.
Vijay is campaigning across the state for the 2026 Assembly elections, holding public rallies in two districts every Saturday. Today, his rallies in Namakkal and Karur drew large crowds.
