New Delhi, May 10: Monsoon season may arrive in Kerala on May 27 as predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday that this time monsoon is about to enter Kerala on May 27. Last year monsoon reached Kerala on 30th May.
The Meteorological Department said on Saturday that the advance of southwest monsoon starts with the monsoon season in Kerala. As the monsoon moves north, people get relief from the scorching heat. Southwest monsoon usually arrives in Kerala on June 1, with a standard deviation of about 7 days.
IMD has forecast monsoon on May 27 this year using an indigenously developed state-of-the-art statistical model. This indigenous model studies the minimum temperature over northwest India, the phase of pre-monsoon rainfall over the southern peninsula, the mean sea level pressure over the subtropical northwest Pacific Ocean, the outgoing longwave radiation over the South China Sea, the lower tropospheric zonal wind over the northeast Indian Ocean and the upper tropospheric zonal wind over the Indonesia region.
During the last 20 years, most of the IMD forecasts regarding the date of onset of monsoon over Kerala have proved to be accurate.
