Country likely to receive above normal rainfall in August-September, predicts IMD

New Delhi, July 31: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday that this year the country is likely to receive more than normal rainfall in the second part of the monsoon i.e. August and September.

IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mahapatra told in an online press conference that most parts of the country are expected to receive normal rainfall in August, but some areas of the Northeast and adjoining East India may receive less rainfall.

He said, “Rainfall is likely to be more than normal in the month of September. Overall, there is a possibility of more than average rainfall i.e. 106 percent rainfall across the country in the second part of the monsoon period of June-September. This estimate is based on the long-term average (LPA) of 422.8 mm. Mahapatra said that there has been six percent more rainfall from June to July .

The country received 474.3 mm rainfall from June 01 to July 31 as against the normal 445.8 mm rainfall, which is 6 per cent more. The country recorded 624 very heavy rainfall and 76 extremely heavy rainfall incidents, which are the lowest figures in the last five years. Northeast India has received less than normal rainfall. This is the fifth consecutive year. In the last 30 years, a trend of decline in rainfall activity has been observed in the northeastern states. Above normal rainfall is also expected in the month of September.
