New Delhi, September 4: Union Health Secretary Apoorva Chandra on Wednesday wrote a letter to all states and union territories asking them to provide information about the steps taken for the safety of doctors and other medical professionals. States and union territories have been asked to respond in this regard by September 10.
In a letter written to the Chief Secretaries of all states on September 3, it has been said that in a meeting held with the officials of states and union territories through video conferencing on August 28, many important aspects of ensuring safety to doctors and medical professionals were discussed.
In this, the states were asked to conduct security audit in medical colleges, identify sensitive institutions, monitor through CCTV, make better coordination with local police, form a security committee, ensure security check arrangements in institutions and other measures. A report has been sought from the states in this regard.
It is noteworthy that after the incident of rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, doctors across the country protested for a long time demanding security. After the intervention of the Supreme Court in this matter, the Central Government has formed a committee to suggest security measures. Along with this, the Union Health Ministry has written a letter to all the states and held a meeting through video conferencing and directed them to ensure the safety of doctors.
