New Delhi, February 24: The central government has approved the change of the state’s name to ‘Keralam’. With this, the process of changing the state’s name under Article 3 of the Constitution has begun.

The proposal to this effect was approved at the first cabinet meeting held on Tuesday at the new ‘Seva Teerth’ under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister Ashwini Vaishnav informed about the cabinet’s decisions at a press conference held at the National Media Centre.

He stated that in June last year, the state government had passed a proposal to change the state’s name to ‘Keralam’.

He said that after receiving the Union Cabinet’s approval, the bill will now be sent to the President. The President will then send the bill to the state assembly for its views. After receiving the assembly’s views, it will be introduced in Parliament after the President’s approval.
