Dehradun, July 16: The Uttarakhand government has taken crucial steps to promote the Indian knowledge tradition under the National Education Policy 2020. Two highly revered scriptures of Hinduism the ‘ Bhagavad Gita’ and the ‘Ramayana’ will be made part of the curriculum in the government schools of the state from the academic session 2026-27.
Also, recitation of verses of Gita has started in schools to encourage moral education.
In fact, on May 6, 2025, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had instructed the officials in the review meeting of the Education Department that the provision of Indian knowledge tradition has been made in the new education policy. Under that, Srimad Bhagavad Gita and Ramayana should be included in the curriculum of children. Due to which the education department has taken another step forward and has started recitation of shlokas of Shrimad Bhagavad Gita in all the schools of the state from July 15.
Director of Secondary Education Department Dr Mukul Kumar Sati said that orders have been issued to all the Chief Education Officers. According to the order issued, give information about Indian knowledge tradition and life values to the children by taking some shlokas of Shrimad Bhagavad Gita in schools.
Order issued by the education department
– At least one shloka of Shrimad Bhagavad Gita should be recited to the students with meaning every day in the prayer assembly.
– Students should be informed about the scientific approach of the shloka.
– Every week a value based shloka should be declared as ‘Shloka of the week’ and it should be written on the notice board with meaning.
– Children should practice it and this shloka should be discussed on the last day of the week.
– Teachers should explain the shlokas from time to time and give information to the children.
– How the principles of Shrimad Bhagavad Gita develop human values, behaviour, leadership skills, decision making ability, emotional balance and scientific thinking.
– Students should also be informed that the teachings given in Shrimad Bhagavad Gita are based on Sankhya, psychology, logic, behavioural science and moral philosophy which are useful for the entire humanity from a secular point of view.
– The verses of Shrimad Bhagavad Gita should not be taught to students only as a subject or reading material.
