New Delhi, January 23: Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) saved the life of a 42-year-old woman by performing a major, complex surgery. Doctors successfully removed a stage-4 colon cancer tumor weighing approximately 20 kilograms from the body of this woman from Durgapur, West Bengal.

Professor M.D. Ray of the Department of Surgical Oncology, IRCH, AIIMS Delhi, explained that excessive consumption of red meat, fast food, and a diet lacking in fiber damages the colon. He added that constipation, irregular bowel movements, and a sedentary lifestyle cause persistent irritation in the intestines, significantly increasing the risk of cancer.

This surgery is not only a medical achievement but also an important warning to people about how a wrong lifestyle can cause cancer. The patient, Munmun, had been battling colon cancer for a long time. The cancer had spread to several parts of her body, including the liver, uterus, ovaries, and the inner lining of her abdomen. She underwent months of chemotherapy, followed by two extremely risky surgeries. Now, after treatment, Munmun is completely cancer-free and recovering rapidly.

AIIMS doctors say this case sends a serious public health message. Colon cancer cases are rapidly increasing, and the main reasons behind this are poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle.

Doctors advise people to eat a balanced diet, eat more green vegetables and fruits, engage in regular physical activity, and not ignore stomach-related problems. Timely screening and a healthy lifestyle can prevent serious diseases like colon cancer.

This case demonstrates that along with proper treatment, a healthy lifestyle is equally important.
