Kanpur, April 1: The Kanpur police has intensified the crackdown in the international kidney smuggling case as raids continue across Rawatpur and Kalyanpur, with more doctors under the scanner and private hospitals in other districts now facing investigation.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), West, S.M. Qasim Abidi stated on Wednesday that six accused have been arrested so far in this case, but the names of several other doctors and associates have also surfaced during the investigation. Many of these accused are currently absconding, and police teams are continuously conducting raids to search for them. Officials say the gang’s network may be more extensive than previously thought, so hospitals in other districts have also been included in the investigation.

The DCP stated that two individuals involved in the kidney sales case have been questioned extensively, which has revealed several new facts. Based on these findings, the police are now working to connect the links of the entire network. Both donors are currently undergoing treatment, their condition is reported to be stable, and their families have been informed.

He further apprised that the investigation also revealed that one of the kidney donors is an MBA student from Dehradun. He took this step due to financial constraints and the pressure of paying fees. This revelation exposes the harsh truth of this entire racket, where compulsion and the lure of money combine to push people into this illegal trap.

The police officer stated that the entire case is being thoroughly probed and the investigations are underway, taking every aspect into account. Continuous efforts are being made to arrest the absconding accused and reach other members of the network.

He further told that earlier, in a joint operation by the police and health department, the gang was busted by raiding Ahuja, Priya, and Midlife hospitals in Kalyanpur and Rawatpur. Cash and a large quantity of suspicious medications were recovered from the scene. The arrested accused include six people, including Dr Preeti Ahuja and Dr Sujit Singh Ahuja.

He said that preliminary investigations also indicated that the gang connected patients and donors through social media platforms, especially Telegram. Police are now investigating the network’s interstate and international connections.
