New Delhi, March 12: The Supreme Court, while hearing a petition seeking a ban on animal sacrifice in temples in the name of religion, has issued a notice to the Central Government. A bench headed by Justice Vikram Nath ordered the next hearing of the case after a month.

Lawyer Shruti Bisht has stated in the petition that the government and administration are completely silent on the issue of animal sacrifice in temples. The petition demands a ban on animal sacrifice in the name of religion by making necessary amendments to Section 28 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Section 28 states that sacrificing an animal as per religious custom is not a crime.

The petition demands a ban on slaughtering animals during religious festivals. The petition states that the practice of animal sacrifice currently persists in Bali, Indonesia, the Himalayan region of India, Northeast India, Odisha, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and southern states. The petition calls for a coordinated approach to this issue, including strong laws and public awareness campaigns with the support of NGOs.
