Mirzapur, February 24: A dramatic yet heartwarming incident unfolded aboard train number 20801 Magadh Express late last night when a 35-year-old woman, Purniya Devi, delivered a baby while travelling in the general coach. The train was en route from Islampur to Kanpur when she experienced labor pains around 12:40 am.
Upon receiving information from the Commercial Department, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) acted promptly, rushing to provide assistance. Both mother and newborn were safely transported to the district hospital, where doctors confirmed that they are healthy.
Purniya Devi was travelling with her husband, Sudhir Manjhi, and their two children when the unexpected delivery occurred. The RPF’s quick response has drawn praise, turning a tense situation into a story of relief and resilience.
The RPF team swung into action as soon as the information was received. Assistant Sub-Inspector Ashok Kumar and Constable Pradeep Kumar Pal II coordinated with Commercial Department employees Ravindra Kumar Vishwakarma and Vishal Kumar. As soon as the train arrived at platform number three at 12:45 a.m., the team provided assistance to the pregnant woman. At around 1 a.m., railway physician Dr. V.K. Singh arrived at the scene and provided first aid.
Upon questioning, the woman identified herself as Purniya Devi (35), wife of Sudhir Manjhi, resident of Lalpur, Kawakol police station, Nawada district (Bihar). After receiving first aid, the mother and child were sent by ambulance to the district hospital for better treatment. Constable Pradeep Kumar Pal II accompanied them during the hospitalization process.
