India in digital mode: Sharp rise of 29% in UPI transactions in December

New Delhi, January 01: Online transactions are forging a new path day by day in the country. In the month of December 2025, a sharp increase has been acknowledged in the transactions done through Unified Payments Interface (UPI). In the month of December, UPI has made a record of 21.63 billion transactions worth Rs 27.97 lakh crore.

In the data released on Thursday, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) said that 21.63 billion transactions were done through UPI in December, which is 29% more than last year. At the same time, the total amount of transactions has also increased by 20% to reach Rs 27.97 lakh crore.

According to the data, the number and amount of UPI transactions have seen significant growth month-on-month. In December, the average daily transaction volume was โ‚น90,217 crore, compared to โ‚น87,721 crore in November.

In December, the average daily UPI transaction volume was 698 million (approximately 698 million), up from 682 million in November. The number of UPI transactions in November was 20.47 billion, a 32% increase year-on-year. The total transaction volume for that month was โ‚น26.32 lakh crore, a 22% increase.

Meanwhile, transactions through the Instant Money Transfer System (IMPS) totaled โ‚น6.62 lakh crore in December. This is a 10% increase compared to last year and exceeds the โ‚น6.15 lakh crore in November. Additionally, IMPS transactions reached 380 million in December, compared to 369 million in November. Daily IMPS transactions totaled โ‚น21,269 crore (approximately $2.2 billion), up from โ‚น20,506 crore (approximately $2.5 billion) in November.

According to a report, India now has 709 million active UPI QR codes, a 21% rise since July 2024. With QR codes accessible at grocery stores, medical stores, bus terminals, railway stations, and villages, scanning and making payments has become commonplace across the country. This has bridged the gap between cities and villages, and India has emerged as a strong digital nation globally.
