Lucknow, 26 December: The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to observe National Road Safety Month as ‘Zero Fatality Month’ with the aim of reducing deaths due to road accidents to zero.

The National Road Safety Month-2026 will start from January 1 and will continue till January 31. During this period, all the concerned stakeholder departments including Transport, Police, Public Works, Health, Education, Panchayati Raj and Information Department of the state have been directed to take action in a coordinated manner.

In this sequence, meetings of the District Road Safety Committee are being organized in all the districts of the state from 25 December. In which the outline of special campaigns to be run during the Road Safety Month is being prepared.

363 high-risk corridors identified in the state, strict enforcement action to be taken

The state’s Transport and Police Departments have completed all preparations to achieve the goal of zero fatalities during National Road Safety Month. So far, 363 high-risk corridors have been identified in the state, where strict enforcement campaigns will be launched. Additionally, 233 critical police station areas have been identified in 20 districts selected under the ongoing Zero Fatality District Scheme. Special campaigns will be launched in these areas to ensure accident control. Guidelines have also been issued to take effective action against drunk driving, overspeeding, lane violations, driving in the wrong direction, not wearing helmets and seat belts, vehicles without reflector tape, fog lights, permits, and vehicles operating without fitness.

The Health Department is improving emergency response protocols

A state government spokesperson stated that a statewide “No Helmet, No Fuel” campaign will be launched in January to inculcate the habit of wearing helmets among two-wheeler riders. To reduce the number of deaths due to road accidents, the Public Works Department (PWD) and other road-owning agencies have been instructed to complete short-term improvement works, such as road markings, signage, and crash barriers, at the 1,484 identified black spots. In this regard, the Health Department is making necessary efforts to improve emergency response protocols, increase the number of ALS ambulances, and address gaps in infrastructure and manpower at trauma care centers.

The Education and Information Department will launch an awareness campaign

The Panchayati Raj Department will organize road safety meetings in each Gram Sabha, ensuring necessary arrangements to raise awareness at the village level and reduce road accidents in rural areas. The Education Department will also raise awareness among children about road safety through painting, speech, and drama competitions in schools.

The Information Department will collaborate with the Transport Department to widely disseminate traffic rules.

The government aims to significantly reduce road accidents through these coordinated efforts, especially during National Road Safety Month in January 2026, and realize Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision of “Zero Fatality.” This campaign will be implemented further.
