Maharashtra ATS raids Mumbra and Kurla, Urdu teacher Ibrahim Abidi held for radicalising youths

Mumbai, November 12: The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) conducted raids in the Kausa area of ​​Mumbra and Kurla on Wednesday, seizing several electronic devices, mobile phones, storage drives, and digital materials, officials said.

The items recovered at the scene have been sent for forensic and technical analysis to determine if any incriminating data or communications are linked to ongoing terrorism-related investigations, told investigating agency.

The ATS has detained Urdu language instructor Ibrahim Abidi in connection with the case, and interrogation is ongoing.

The ATS officer investigating the case stated that Ibrahim Abidi lived in a rented house in the Kausa area of ​​Mumbra and visited a mosque in Kurla every Sunday to conduct Urdu classes. The ATS suspects that this individual was attempting to influence youth through radical teachings or propaganda, which could have potential links to terrorist activities. 

Recently, a software engineer, Jabair Ilyas, was arrested from Pune for alleged links to Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent. He was accused of promoting jihadist ideology and disseminating radical material online.

The investigation also revealed that the call to Pakistan was made from the Kurla mosque where Ibrahim Abidi ran Urdu classes. The ATS team is currently interrogating Ibrahim.
