New Delhi, June 25: The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday observed two minutes of silence on the 50th anniversary of the Emergency and reaffirmed its faith in India’s democracy. In a resolution, the Cabinet urged all citizens to draw inspiration from the protectors of constitutional values โ€‹โ€‹and democratic spirit.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav informed about the decisions and resolutions passed in the Cabinet in a press conference held at the National Media Center.

He read out the Cabinet resolution on the completion of 50 years of Emergency. He said that the Union Cabinet expressed respect for the warriors who failed the attempt to murder the Constitution. This attack on the Constitution started in 1974 with a harsh attempt to crush the Navnirman Movement and the Total Revolution Campaign. In the meeting, 2 minutes of silence was observed to pay tribute to the unparalleled courage and sacrifice of the heroes of the Republic. Tribute was also dedicated to those whose democratic rights granted by the Constitution were snatched away and who had to face unimaginable tortures.

The resolution said that the year 2025 is the 50th anniversary of ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’. This was an unforgettable chapter in Indian history. During the Emergency, work was done to crush the Constitution, attack the democratic spirit of India and destroy federalism. Fundamental rights, human freedom and dignity were also abolished.

The Union Cabinet called upon senior citizens as well as the youth to learn from these democracy fighters. These heroes opposed dictatorial tendencies and firmly protected our Constitution and democratic spirit. It said that India, as the mother of democracy, is the embodiment of the preservation, protection and defense of constitutional values. As a nation, we should further strengthen our resolve to maintain our Constitution and its democratic and federal spirit.
