5,500 railway stations in the country equipped with free wifi facility
New Delhi, 07 December: Railways have successfully completed the work of providing free public Wi-Fi at 5500 stations in the country. Mahua Milan railway station of Jharkhand, equipped with this facility, has become the 5500th station in the country.
The Railway Ministry issued this information in a release on Saturday. Indian Railways has entrusted Miniratna PSU, RailTel, to provide free high-speed Wi-Fi at railway stations. It was launched from Mumbai Central Station in January 2016 and in 46 months, Railways has provided this facility at 5500 stations across the country. Railways aim to provide Wi-Fi at all railway stations (except Halt).
RailTel CMD Puneet Chawla said that RailTel enlisted the help of companies like Google, Tata Trusts, PGCIL for parts of the project and financial support from the Department of Telecommunications, USOF for 200 stations. Wi-Fi is being made available under the brand name of Railwire.
To use this railway feature, the user has to switch on Wi-Fi mode on the smartphone and select Railwire Wi-Fi network. The Railwire homepage automatically appears on the smartphone. The user has to enter their mobile number on this homepage. The user will get one-time password (OTP) in the message box in the form of SMS which is to be entered in the home page of Railwire. After entering OTP, users will be able to use high speed internet and can start browsing the internet.
